SoopySue 1 Help: Statuary Copyrights

Ah, Jim, it's all part and parcel of the iStock experience.

Check this thread out. It was clearly stated that no images from Kew Gardens would be accepted here. I wondered how they would know that a particular tree, flower etc had been taken there and was accused of trolling!

However, there are 90 photos here keyworded 'Kew Gardens', c40 uploaded since that thread, some of them featuring the distinctive buildings. Yup, I guess they might have got property releases. However the balance of likelihood is not; usually when I write enquiring about PRs I don't get a reply. The one and only reply (not Kew) I got quoted a price such as even if I sold 500 images (which wasn't at all likely) at an average of $2 each, I'd be quids out.

Nearly fell out with my sister two years in a row when we've been in London and I've refused to go out to Kew.

sak12344 2 Discussion: What was I thinking???

Questions: When you re-keyword an image, does it have to go through the resubmission process all over again (meaning - do you run the risk of having the image deleted from your portfolio for improper keywords)??

When submitting new images, I've often checked the keywords of similar images for ideas of appropriate keywords. Unfortunately, many of my images have been rejected for invalid keywords. Example: keywords for a side view of a handgun isolated on white was originally denied for keywords like, "homicide, crime, criminal, police" etc. And yet, numerous other images of handguns in the database have those same keywords. So, I remove the offending keywords, sticking to "descriptive only" words (gun, handgun, caliber, black, etc), and the image is accepted. I'm sure the lack of those other keywords limit the odds of my image being found amoung the thousands of images in the database. Can the difference in current keywording be due to the recent changes in "best match" rules?? If so, I'll just stick to "descriptive only" keywords and keep on pluggin' away at making new images.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Susan

zofiap 3 iStockaudio: Marketing of iStock_Audio

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering about iStock's plans for marketing iStock_Audio. I subscribe to a few creative magazines and the photo side is always being advertised and promoted (free stock photos etc) and it got me thinking . . . is iStock planning something for us audio contributors? :) Can you give us the heads up?

Cheers

Zofia

Sproetniek 4 iStockvideo: HDV export under Final Cut express

I have not worked with HDV footage yet, but had similar issues with FCE in the beginning, and tried the various codecs through QT Conversion until I decided on the H264 for the best balance of size and quality. Maybe try the following: instead of exporting through QT conversion, open the clip in your left viewer, and don't drag it onto the timeline. Set in and out-points, and export as Quicktime (uncompressed). Do the same with QT conversion, and use the H.264 codec, quality set to 95%. Check what the difference in file size and quality is.

If you can get hold of FCPro Studio, do so, and use Compressor in Studio. There are quite a few setups or templates for conversions, which seem to be far more sophisticated than QT Conversion. I used QT Conversion to convert PAL to NTSC in the beginning, but the quality is not good. Now I use Compressor for it, and struggle to see the difference. Maybe this is the route to go for you.

I had uploaded so many at first that I was taking a break. I bought some new equipment and I tried it out yesterday so today I been working on some of the images. I put a few in queue let's see how long that will take

Yeah, it seems to take up to 3-5 days at the moment even for exclusive images. Might be a side-effect of the iStockalypse in Istanbul right now and I hope it will improve again later next week...

And I know the "I've seen too much" feeling right now. I soooo feel in the mood to shot some more this week. But I said to myself that I will not set up any new shoots until I have at least the mass of images processed that I shot during the last three months.

I think I'm getting close to it with my Florida images (68 approved, 9 more in the queue, I think I will get maybe 15-20 more out of it). I hope I'll finish those next week. And then I have to move on to the pics I shot in Canada in August and two shoots I had here in June and September. :-)

Because of the difference between the ProPhoto RGB and Adobe RGB perhaps?

That'd be my guess. Tell us about the photo in Photoshop. Is it 8 bit Adobe RGB?

Yes. So it seems that the quality reduction following the transition to 8 bit makes the difference, correct?

When I open the file in PS using ProPhoto 16 bit it is just the same, the posterization is visible and the image ia a bit lighter than in Lightroom where the image is darker and the posterization is not visible. When I lighten the image in Lightroom (no pun intended) the posterization is showing too of course. To me it seems as if PS is doing something with the image Lightroom and Capture NX aren't doing.

Oh, thanks for the taxonomy! Yes, it's a delicacy in some cultures, so I thought *maybe* this might get a download now and then.

It al depends on how much you want to spend. For example Calumet have the following:

As long as you stay with UHF you should be Ok - but avoid VHF - there are too many things that interfere with it.

Another thing to consider is a good shotgun microphone that you can point at the speaker but is wired directly to your camera.
